Are you pitching potential investors, wooing a new client, or interviewing for a job? It is worth your time to first become self-aware and determine the impression you make and how you think others perceive you.

This step must come first because you may miss out on a major opportunity simply by not modifying your demeanor to suit the situation.

Modifying your demeanor does not mean being falsely genuine and sincere in who you are, but rather making sure to be situationally appropriate, dressing the part, and using the language and terms that best suit the setting.

As much as we all wish that actual qualifications and the knowledge base we’ve amassed matters most, people are more likely to make quick decisions based on first impressions being an arbiter to our professional competence. And we can include ourselves as the makers of those same quick decisions when the tables are turned.

Impression management is the practice of ensuring the message you wish to send is understood by the specific individuals or groups you want to reach. It also means influencing, through your dress, demeanor, and physiology how people interpret what you say, and what is said about you.

Everything that at one time scared me, I’m now doing.
